Measurement and testing is at the core of our methodology - we want to ensure that the carbon we are burying is secured. This starts with measuring the moisture content of the biomass. Different trees have different moisture levels, so we use state of the art meters to ensure accuracy.
The biomass is then loaded into the trucks and weighed. This gives us a starting point for how much carbon we are about to put in the ground. This truck will carry about 26,000 lbs of biomass to its final location.
Testing and validation begins after the biomass is destroyed and stacked in piles.
It is then identified by species type, weighed for carbon content and wood density, and sampled for moisture content and wood type. All of this information is logged in real time and backed by verifiable outputs, scale readings and pictures.
Once the biomass is buried and covered by the clay cap measuring 5' - 15', decomposition is measured in two ways:
Direct excavation
Volumetric and mass balancing through examination of gas emissions through the gas collection system, which is contained in the clay cap.
Testing emissions from below ground is also an important step in the process. While it may not look glamorous, the gasses measured inside the vaults give critical data for understanding decomposition, vault stability, and long term effectiveness.
